Miljöbyggnad and BASTA – support for non-toxic and documented buildings
Miljöbyggnad is a Swedish certification system for sustainable buildings with a focus on the environment, health and energy. A central part of the certification is to reduce the presence of hazardous substances in building products and to ensure good documentation of used building materials.
The BASTA system is a well-established tool in the construction sector that in several ways supports the work of fulfilling Miljöbyggnad's requirements in these areas.
Phasing out hazardous substances in construction products
One of Miljöbyggnad's indicators is about phasing out hazardous substances. The aim is to limit chemical substances with health and environmental hazardous properties in construction products.
BASTA helps by:
- Setting clear requirements for chemical content in construction products
- Providing an assessment of current chemical legislation and hazard classification
- Offering support to see which level within Miljöbyggnad a product meets
The level and scope of the requirements differ between different generations of Miljöbyggnad. Products that are registered and assessed in BASTA provide a structured and reliable basis for showing that the requirements for chemical content are met.
Documentation of construction products and logbook
In all versions of Miljöbyggnad there is also an indicator that concerns documentation of which construction products have been used in the building. This indicator is about traceability and transparency and is not a chemical assessment in itself.
BASTA can be used to support this work:
- We show whether a product has an electronic construction product declaration (eBVD) linked to it
- With BASTA's logbook service, used construction products can be documented in a structured way.
The BASTA system is integrated with eBVD, and the connection to available declarations is shown directly on the respective item card in BASTA. This makes it easy to meet Miljöbyggnad's documentation requirements and at the same time ensure that the correct information is available throughout the building's life cycle.
