Certifications of buildings

There are a number of environmental certifications for buildings with different focuses. The vast majority have criteria to promote digital logbooks and to minimize hazardous substances in products that are built in. Below follows information on various certifications and how the BASTA systems grades and logbook service relate to these.

Miljöbyggnad

Within Miljöbyggnad, there are two indicators that relate to the BASTA system.

Indicator - Phasing out of hazardous substances

This indicator limits substances with dangerous properties found in construction products, which relates to BASTA's criteria and rating levels. The requirement levels differ between the criteria generations, read more below,

Indicator - Documentation of building materials / Log book with building materials

In all generations of Miljöbyggnad there is an indicator that includes documentation of building materials used in the building. This has nothing to do with an assessment of chemical content. To log which products have been used, BASTA's log book service can be used. For some of the rating levels in Environmental Construction, it is also required that content be logged in the logbook, to do this electronic building product declarations (eBVD) can be used. The BASTA system is synchronized with eBVD and these links to these declarations are shown on BASTA's article card.

Generation 2.X

I. Miljöbyggnad 2.X there is one indicator (indicator 14) dealing with logbooks and an indicator (indicator 15) dealing with dangerous substances in construction products.

BASTA's logbook service passes the BRONZE, SILVER & GOLD rating for this indicator. For the GOLD level, the location and quantity of the products must be entered in the logbook.

In order to meet the grades for this indicator, the chemical content of products must meet certain criteria.

Grade

BASTA: Passes grade level BRONZE, SILVER & GOLD

BETA: Passes grade level BRONZE & SILVER

Generation 3.X

In Miljöbyggnad 3.X, there is an indicator (indicator 13) that handles logbooks and an indicator (indicator 14) that handles hazardous substances in construction products.

BASTA's log book service passes the BRONZE, SILVER & GOLD grade for this indicator. For GOLD, the location and quantity of the products must be entered in the logbook.

For SILVER and GOLD, an eBVD or equivalent is required for articles within certain product categories. The logbook service is linked to eBVD and if there is an eBVD, this is shown on the article, both as information and in the attached PDF file.

In order to meet the grades for this indicator, the chemical content of products must meet certain criteria.

Grade

BASTA: Passes grade level BRONZE, SILVER & GOLD*

*For construction products (including chemical products) that the user is exposed to indoors, applicants must supplement with information showing that the EU-LCI emission values are not exceeded as this is not a criterion for BASTA.

BETA: Passes grade level BRONZE & SILVER

Generation 4.X

In Miljöbyggnad 4.X, there is an indicator (indicator 15) that handles logbooks and an indicator (indicator 9) that handles hazardous substances in construction products.

Grade

BASTA: Passes grade level BRONZE, SILVER & GOLD*.

* For construction products (including chemical products) that the user is exposed to indoors:

  • does not exceed the LCI emission values, emits less than 0.06 mg/m3 formaldehyde.
  • emits less than 0.001 mg of carcinogenic volatile organic compounds in category 1A and 1B per m3. See criteria E2 and E3 for information on emissions.

BETA: Passes grade level BRONZE & SILVER

BREEAM-SE

BREEAM has no mandatory criteria concerning logbook or chemical content of products. However, it is possible to collect points if you meet criteria regarding log books and dangerous content in products, this is described in the criterion "Mat 07 Dangerous substances"

BASTA's logbook service meets all criteria levels, however, it is required to add information about the approximate quantity and location of the products in the building along with information about the composition from an eBVD och building product declaration

BREEAM-SE 2017

These criteria deal with the phasing out of substances.

Betyg:

BASTA - Passes the requirements for criteria:

  • 1 - Construction materials and chemical products
  • 4 - Installation products
  • 7 - Exemplary level

BETA - Passes the requirements for criteria:

  • 1 - Construction materials and chemical products
  • 4 - Installation products

BASTA's logbook service meets all assessment criteria if an eBVD or similar exists for the product, is visible on the product's article card and the following is stated in the logbook:

  • Approximate location in the building
  • Approximate quantity
  • Justifications for deviations (if applicable)

This means that if you use BASTA's Logbook Service for your articles and all pass BASTA (some deviations can be approved), you can take two points and one point at exemplary level. If the articles pass the grade level BETA, you can get two points.

To achieve this amount and placement must be noted and an eBVD or building product declaration needs to be saved.

BREEAM-SE V6.x (2023)

Svanen - Nordic Ecolabel

Nordic labeling of buildings has criteria for logbook (O15) and for chemical products (Chapter 4)

BASTA's log book service meets the requirement for a log book. However, criteria are also set that there must be information about content. This is fulfilled if eBVD exists for all articles. The logbook service is linked to eBVD and if there is an eBVD, this is shown on the article, both as information and in the attached PDF file.

Many of the criteria set for construction products in the Nordic Ecolabel are included in the BASTA system. However, all articles to be used in the Nordic-labelled building must be approved in the Nordic ecolabel's own House Products Portal.

The Swan does not accept that the product was checked by another party and thus none of the rating levels in the BASTA system can be used.
