How Wellfish uses the BASTA-system API in its climate calculations

Wellfish is developing an AI-driven platform for automated climate calculations based on companies’ actual purchases. We spoke with CEO and founder Mattias about how the company uses the BASTA-system API to access verified material data and create more accurate climate calculations.

Tell us about yourself and Wellfish

My name is Mattias, CEO and founder of Wellfish. We have built an AI-driven platform that automates climate calculations directly from companies’ financial systems, using supplier invoices, receipts and travel data.

No manual Excel categorisation and no spend-based estimates. We calculate based on what has actually happened, using activity-based data that can be traced back to each individual invoice in accordance with the GHG Protocol.

The idea is simple: every company should be able to understand its climate footprint without having to spend weeks calculating it.

How do you use the BASTA-system API?

We retrieve verified material data directly from the BASTA-system via the API and match it with the customer’s actual purchases.
Instead of relying on general industry factors, we can use specific emission factors provided by material manufacturers for products registered in the BASTA-system. This makes the calculations both faster and more accurate. Rather than estimating the climate impact of a material, we can base the calculation on product-specific data.

For the construction industry, this can make a significant difference, as 70–80% of a building’s climate impact comes from the materials themselves.

If you could change one thing in the industry tomorrow, what would it be?

I would like climate data for materials to become as standardised and machine-readable as BASTA-system chemical data is today, across the entire industry, not just among those already connected.

A great deal of accurate data already exists with manufacturers, but it is fragmented and difficult to access in real time. If all that data were open and available via APIs, the entire industry could calculate based on precise data rather than estimates. Today, every tender without climate data is a tender that competitors can win. That competition should be decided by facts, not guesswork.
