What is Miljöbyggnad? 

Miljöbyggnad is a Swedish certification system for sustainable buildings, with a focus on environmental performance, health, and energy efficiency. The system serves as a tool for planning, implementing, and quality-assuring environmental and sustainability efforts throughout a building’s lifecycle. A key aspect of the certification is reducing the occurrence of hazardous substances in construction products while ensuring proper documentation of the building materials used.

The certification covers fifteen indicators related to energy use, climate impact, indoor and outdoor environments, and circularity. There are three certification levels: Gold, Silver, and Bronze.

Several criteria areas within the BASTA system can be used to demonstrate compliance with various Miljöbyggnad indicators. These include areas such as Health and environmental hazard assessment, Emissions (Miljöbyggnad – Phase-out of hazardous substances), Environmental impact and EPD data (Miljöbyggnad – Climate impact), Circularity (Miljöbyggnad – Circular material flows), and whether an eBVD (electronic construction product declaration) is linked to the product.

What does it look like on a product?

Phase-out of hazardous substances in construction products

One of Miljöbyggnad’s indicators focuses on the phase-out of hazardous substances. The purpose is to limit the use of chemical substances with properties that may be harmful to human health and the environment in construction products.

BASTA supports this work by:

  • Setting clear requirements for the chemical content of construction products
  • Providing assessments based on current chemicals legislation and hazard classifications
  • Offering guidance on which Miljöbyggnad level a product can meet

The level and scope of the requirements vary between different versions of Miljöbyggnad. Products that are registered and assessed in BASTA provide a structured and reliable basis for demonstrating compliance with chemical content requirements.

Documentation of construction products and logbook

All versions of Miljöbyggnad include an indicator related to the documentation of the construction products used in a building. This indicator focuses on traceability and transparency and is not a chemical assessment in itself.

BASTA can support this work by:

  • Indicating whether a product has an Electronic Construction Product Declaration (eBVD) linked to it
  • Providing a logbook service that enables construction products used in a project to be documented in a structured manner

The BASTA system is integrated with eBVD, and links to available declarations are displayed directly on each product page in BASTA. This makes it easy to meet Miljöbyggnad’s documentation requirements while ensuring that the right information is available throughout the building’s entire lifecycle.
