About BASTA

Welcome to BASTA!

BASTA is a system for anyone who wants to make conscious product selections with the aim of phasing out substances of concern – for example building owners, contractors, architects, structural engineers or individuals.

The BASTA system contributes to achieving Sweden’s national environmental goal “Non-toxic environment” and the UN’s global goal “Responsible consumption and production” by phasing ou substances with hazardous properties from building and construction products.

BASTAs database with articles that meet the criteria

The building and construction products found in the BASTA database fulfill BASTA’s requirements for chemical content. The BASTA database search function is open and freely available to everyone, either from our website or via our API.

In BASTA’s database you find articles are registered by suppliers and manufacturers of building and construction products. For each article there is information about which of BASTA’s criteria levels that the article fulfils. To register an article in the database, it must meet the requirements regarding the content of substances with dangerous properties. The registered articles are checked, and the quality of the information is assured through regular audits.

BASTAs Logbook service

BASTA Logbook is a web-based tool for documenting product selections at all stages of the building- and construction process. BASTA Logbook service focuses on traceability and digitisation with direct connections to the FINFO database and the industry’s system for digital construction product declarations eBVD.

Organisation

Major players in the construction industry support BASTA, as do authorities such as the Swedish Chemicals Agency and the Swedish Transport Administration.

BASTA is a non-profit-driven company and is jointly owned by IVL – the Swedish Environmental Research Institute, and the Swedish Construction Federation.

The following criteria levels can be found in the BASTA system:

BASTA – Products that fulfill the system’s more stringent chemical composition criteria. The requirements are defined in the BASTA properties criteria.

BETA – Products that fulfill the system’s basic chemical composition criteria. The requirements are defined in the BETA properties criteria

BETA to BASTA – Chemical products that change their chemical content during use when curing or drying. It is BETA in its delivery form but becomes BASTA when built in.

DECLARED – Products that do not meet the BASTA or BETA criteria, but where there is complete knowledge of the products chemical content.

DECLARED to BASTA – Chemical products that change their chemical content during use when curing or drying. It is DECLARED in its delivery form but becomes BASTA when built in.
