The criteria in BASTA are based on science and are carefully controlled. This means that you do not need to make your own evaluations and assessments of which chemicals to use, which can be a costly process. The suppliers have already done that work for you by guaranteeing that their products meet the BASTA criteria. In order to guarantee quality, random independent system inspections are made on supplier documentation. Any supplier that does not live up to the requirements is removed from the system.

BASTA is an initiative taken by the Swedish construction industry with the objective of producing the best products from environmental and human health perspectives. This is achieved through a process in which suppliers guarantee that their products meet a number of requirements regarding the chemical properties of the components of a product. Only products that meet these requirements can be registered in BASTA. It is easy to find out which products meet the requirements by searching the database, which is free of charge.

The EU is working actively to phase out hazardous chemicals. This work is focused around the new regulation on chemicals and their safe use, REACH. The BASTA requirements are completely in agreement with the rules, regulation and application of REACH. So you can always be sure that when you choose a product that is registered in the BASTA database, you are following current legislation and rules of application for the use of chemicals in the EU.
