There are certain terms of qualification that must be met by all products registered in the BASTA system. These terms place demands on both the product and on the supplier. The demands on the product ingredients are called the “properties criteria". They ensure that products do not contain chemical substances (above stated concentrations) with the following properties:- Carcinogenic substances
- Mutagenic substances (cause heritable genetic damage)
- Substances toxic to reproduction (impair fertility)
- Persistent or very persistent organic substances (low degradability)
- Bioaccumulative or very bioaccumulative organic substances (accumulate in tissue)
- Substances harmful to the ozone layer
- The content of lead, mercury and cadmium is regulated
- Furthermore, the content of sensitising substances, solvents, toxic and environmentally hazardous substances is limited in chemical products
There are two levels to the properties criteria. Products that meet the more comprehensive requirements are held in the BASTA register. Products that only meet the more basic requirements are instead held in the BETA register and an environmental and health risk assessment is required for these products. Products in the BETA register should only be chosen after careful consideration.
The following demands are placed on suppliers:
- Declaration of contents. The supplier must have detailed knowledge of the product´s chemical composition
- Supporting documentation for the assessment. The supplier must be able to provide documentation to support the assessment that the product meets the properties criteria
- Competence requirement. We demand that those who undertake the product assessment can demonstrate necessary competence in environmental and health assessments
- System audits. We undertake regular controls to ensure that participating suppliers follow the BASTA terms of qualification. During a system audit suppliers must be able to provide documentation that supports the product assessments.
